Robin
just discovering "The Wine Trials" (2008 edition). Very interesting.
Page 17 you discuss the blind tasting issue. Parker comes here to Gigondas every year (end August) for his annual tasting and has been doing so for as far back as I can remember. Up until a few years ago (3 I think) he would always taste blind, i.e. the bottles all had elastic "socks" covering them. He now tastes all the wines non-blind. This really shocks me. Despite 35 years of immersion in wine I totally agree with your conclusion that it is IMPOSSIBLE to judge the quality of a wine 100% objectively if you know beforehand what the wine is.
For Parker, who claims to respect the highest moral standards of impartiality, I was really shocked to witness his abandoning one the most elementary rules of impartiality : not knowing a wine's identity before tasting.

Robin,

As you revealed your potential biases in the article, I will gladly reveal mine: ANYTHING that takes Robert Parker down a notch is good in my book.

Perhaps I missed it in your article, but I think you're omitting a rather obvious theory to explain why Parker scraps his 100 point system in his tome of wine bargains. Is is possible that he, god forbid, likes some of these sub-$25 bottles as much, or even BETTER than the $100-plus bottles that grace the pages of his wine buyer's guide?

Although Robert Parker is a complete bullshit artist, I think we can both agree he is nevertheless a powerful figure, perhaps the most powerful in the wine industry.

Imagine the repercussions of publishing wine ratings for cheap wines that were even CLOSE to those of the financially untouchable ones. Not only would such a practice completely invalidate the embarassingly high price of some wines, it would also deal a crushing blow to his own self-proclaimed expertise!

In the interest of self-preservation, would Robert Parker ever consider doing such a thing? Of course not. Suggesting that there are cheap wines out there that are just as enjoyable as the expensive ones? Sound like a familiar concept? :).

Just some food for thought. I truly loved your book review, and public castration of Robert Parker. Cheers.

Herb butter under the skin to self baste the bird as it cooks, occasionaly turning the bird so the juices run back, when resting rest on the breast so all those basting juices flow back and make the bird juicy and tender.

Maybe I should review this sentence: obviously, there would be some all opposition guanciale zealots in Italy. They usually sink, seem to agriculture. A question: "zero tolerance," when it comes to food, is the fascist, self-righteousness, noble - or all three - is of course to further thinking.

With respect to the other half-point, if there are indeed “consistent differences in how the two publications rate quality, which leads to predictable differences in advertising,” then you should try leafing through a copy of Wine Spectator and seeing if you’d trust critics who favor the types of wines that tend to advertise in the magazine. I think the roster of advertisers speaks for itself.

I completely agree about legalizing marijuana and taxing its use. But I will never understand or support cocaine use. At least marijuana is all natural. My proposal would be to legalize just MJ and keep fighting all other types of hard drugs. I've never seen a student getting any good grades while on heroine or any other hard stuff anyway.

I'm curious as to how Cloudy Bay's sales were after being marketed as a luxury wine. Was this an effective marketing move?

What would you say would be a reasonable profit for wine? (I'm more of the demand-side perspective!)

Thought-provoking article - thanks!

This app has both good and bad effects. Yes indeed it's helpful and informative but it somehow iviolates people's (gays) right to privacy. Imagine the situation where you are at a cafe and this app tells you there's one sex offender around you. Then you freak out only to find out that the person just committed a minor offense. What a big embarrassment!
